The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) is a professional authority that sets the regulatory standards on field guiding across the industry in South Africa. Established in 1990 by a group of professional guides, FGASA is an accredited training provider that works in conjunction with CATHSSETA within the National Qualifications Framework of South Africa.

FGASA operate their field guiding and nature courses through endorsed training providers across South Africa.

Pathfinders Africa are proud to be the first FGASA endorsed training provider to migrate to Zimbabwe where we offer the world’s first ever endorsed mobile field guide training course! In line with the standards of FGASA, Pathfinders specialise in creating premium, once in a lifetime guiding experiences in Southern Africa.

Discover four unique locations across 2000km of iconic landscapes in Zimbabwe, learning about the various aspects of guiding and building an extensive understanding of the different types of ecosystems, fauna and flora of Southern Africa.

FGASA Courses

All Pathfinders courses are endorsed by FGASA (The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa), who set the regulatory standards on nature guiding in Southern Africa. 

How do I become a Field Guide in Southern Africa?

In order to become a Field Guide in South Africa, you must have undertaken training with a CATHSSETA-accredited training provider, such as FGASA. Our FGASA-endorsed Field Guide course is the perfect introductory course and will earn you an NQF2 Apprentice Field Guide qualification.

This is an essential tool that will assist you in a career as a field guide or in a similar industry.

What requirements do I need to meet in order to apply for the 60-day Pathfinders Field Guide Course?

In order to take part in one of our FGASA NQF2 Field Guide Courses, you need to be at least eighteen years of age, be fluent in written and spoken English, possess a valid manual driver’s licence and enjoy a reasonable level of fitness.

Where will the training take place during the Pathfinders Field Guide Courses?

On our 14-day Nature Enthusiast Course, you will be based at a private safari park just a 10-minute drive from Victoria Falls. Majority of your training will take place in the safari park with some of your practical lessons occurring in the nearby Zambezi National Park.

The 60-day FGASA NQF2 Field Guide Course takes place across four unique locations in Zimbabwe. You will start the course at Antelope Park, voted Zimbabwe’s leading private game reserve and situated in the heart of the Midlands region. You will continue on to Matopos National Park and Bubiana Conservancy, renowned for its spectacular geological features and rock art, as well as their success story with the endangered Rhino. You will next learn in Zimbabwe’s oldest and largest National Park, Hwange National Park. Here, you are likely to come across large prides of Lion as well as vast herds of Elephant and Buffalo. To conclude your course, you will be based in Victoria Falls, also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders), one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

60 Day FGASA Field Guide Training Course

Come and discover the beauty of Southern Africa during the world’s first multi-destination FGASA field guide training program.

This course is an action-packed adventure, exploring a wide range of terrains and wildlife-rich habitats. Successful graduation of the field guide course will earn you a FGASA NQF2 qualification, an essential tool for starting or furthering a career within the guiding, tourism and hospitality industries in South Africa. 

Explore four unique destinations throughout Zimbabwe, each with their own distinctive wildlife and ecologies. This gives our participants a broad knowledge and experience base, having studied various aspects of field guiding across these range of diverse habitats.

Learn fascinating facts about the animals and ecosystems through a mix of theoretical lectures and time out in the field. Expert trainers and guides will be with you every step of the way, sharing with you their passion and knowledge of the African bush.

Pathfinders are committed to showcasing the amazing wildlife of Southern Africa, including the renowned Big Five; Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo and Rhino. Not only will you learn how to identify species, but you will study their behavioural patterns and various conservation techniques that can be responsibly applied to help protect these species for future generations.

14 Day Nature Enthusiast Course

This in-depth two-week course is the perfect opportunity for any nature lover who wants to immerse themselves in the African bush.

Based in the iconic Victoria Falls, participants will spend their days discovering Southern Africa’s most incredible wildlife in a mix of theoretical and practical based training. Each day will be filled with exciting scenarios, learning about basic survival skills, navigation, tracking, astronomy and more!

During free time, participants will be able to explore one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, having Victoria Falls town right on their doorstep.
